Initiation is the first real step toward the accomplishment of the Great Work; it is the first rung on the ladder to the Palace of Wisdom. Without it there is no possibility for genuine Self-Realization. It is the beginning of the creative process of Individuation, of the Soul traveling inward and achieving integration or true Unity of Being. It is the Golden Dawn of the Soul, and the blossoming of the Inner Lotus of the Spirit.

The Neophyte should "endure" nine months or longer of Probation after the initiation before advancing to the next grade of the Zelator. The Zelator should wait twelve to twenty four month or longer after the initiation before advancing to the next grade of the Dominus Liminis. The Dominus Liminis should wait twelve to twenty one months, or longer, after the initiation before taking the Oath of the Adeptus Minor. The Adeptus Minor grade after taking the Oath of the Adeptus Minor. It all begins with taking the Oath, which will awaken the necessary Spiritual Forces and initiate the process from within. It is a real Magical Oath, not to be taken lightly. "A real Magical Oath cannot be broken: you think it can, but it can't. This is the advantage of a real Magical Oath." (Aleister Crowley) The Ceremony for the Adeptus Minor grade can be an elaborately designed invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel and constructed in such manner that the initiate can perform it regularly for a period of six months, or longer if necessary. Those who are truly prepared to invoke their Holy Guardian Angel will be guided aright from within. "It is impossible to lay down precise rules by which a man may attain to the Knowledge and Conversation of his Holy Guardian Angel; for that is the particular secret of each one of us; a secret not to be told or even divined by any other, whatever his grade. It is the Holy of Holies, whereof each man is his own High Priest, and none knoweth the Name of his brother's God, or the Rite that invokes Him." (Aleister Crowley).

Membership in the Order is only to be found within the Soul of the Initiate upon initiation, and through the initiatory experience, not in any external organization or temple, certificate or title. Membership in the Order cannot be purchased. Any sincere aspirant to the Great Work, who is eighteen years of age or older and responsible for him or herself, can become a member of the Order after application.

Membership in the Order really begins with the Zelator initiation, whereas the Neophyte grade is one of probation and preparation. The Zelator initiation places one on the Tree of Initiation, and it is in this position that one becomes a member of the Aurora Aurea.
